Noh Play Screen

This screen depicts a Noh performance “Okina”. It was presumably held inside the Imperial Palace to celebrate the imperial proclamation for the kanpaku to Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1585. In this screen painting, it appears the Emperor Goyozei is sitting behind the blind. The man with his gold fan among others on the balcony is identified as Hideyoshi. Some “Namban-jin (European people)”, one holding a long tobacco pipe, are enjoying the performance in front of the stage.
