The Sickness of Capitão Vassallo

Scurvy is a disease resulting from a lack of vitamin C, a fact not known to early sailors. As the sickness worsens there can be poor wound healing, personality changes, and finally death from infection or bleeding. DaCosta’s diary makes note of Vassallo’s increasingly erratic behavior and constant sickness.
