A Jesuit

A frowning Jesuit priest. The Jesuits accompanied many of the Portuguese voyages, and a large Christian community existed in Nagasaki before crackdowns by the Japanese overnment at the end of the century. DaCosta’s diary makes clear the disdain he and most of the men had for the Jesuits, seeing them as dishonest powerbrokers on the voyage.
